Sprucing Up For Spring

Nine college students from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst recently spent their Spring Break sprucing up the Micah’s Place Shelter and yard. The one male and eight female students were here on a week-long mission trip, sponsored by the Yulee New Vision Congregational Church, U.C.C., Reverend Mary Moore, Springer Control, and the Civic Interfaith Alliance of their university. The student teams cleaned out and reorganized storage sheds, replanted various flower boxes and planters and painted colorful murals on the yard fence.

Led by Micah’s Place Staff Advocate Pam Lee, the group moved over four cubic yards of topsoil and mulch to create a strawberry garden and herb garden at the shelter facility for the residents use.  The tireless volunteers also detailed the Micah’s Place van and put together shelving units for storage at the shelter.

The students hosted the children’s activities group during the weekly evening adult support group meeting, offering creative lessons on good nutrition, being a good neighbor, cooperation and teamwork, and good hygiene habits to the young program participants. The students also led an additional “Kids’ Club” evening, featuring activities stations designed to teach youngsters about healthy relationships.

The Students completed their mission by presenting Micah’s Place with a monetary donation.  They hope that their mission is just one of many to benefit the participants of Micah’s Place.

A Gift of Caring

The members of Girl Scout Troop 202 have made a generous gift of caring to Micah's Place. Troop members Emily Harris and Amelia Wilson, accompanied by 'Cookie Mom' Teresa Wilson, and Leader Stacy Harris, delivered over 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to Micah's Place on March 11, 2011. The girls and their fellow troop members, Gaby and Lexie Sttton, Rachel Woodcock and Jenna Lunt chose Micah's Place as the 2011 recipient of their annual 'Gift of Caring' donation of Girl Scout cookies. The Girl Scouts also delivered candied popcorn on behalf of Cub Scout Pack 353. Micah's Place shelter residents and their children and outreach participants will enjoy the sweet treats.

During the 2010 calendar year, 66 adults and 68 children received safe refuge in a supportive, caring environment at the Micah's Place shelter. Micah's Place is the only certified domestic violence center in Nassau County. Micah's Place provides emergency shelter, counseling, referrals, and case management services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.  24-hour telephone crisis intervention is available by calling: (904) 225-9979 or toll-free at 1-800-500-1119

What a wonderful and caring business community we have.  Generous donations were received through several local businesses' "Employee Donation Programs".  These donations have come at a time when we are experiencing a dramatic swell in the demand for our services.  Thank you to the employees of O'Reilly Auto Parts, John Drew Tax Collector's Office, and Mike Mickler and First Federal Bank.

If your business would like to participate in an "Employee Donation Program", please contact Kelly Monti at 904-491-6364, ext. 100.  This is a fun and creative program, but most importantly, it will help victims and their children of domestic violence.

Micah’s Place would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Savannah Grand staff, residents and ambassadors for the organization of the bountiful food baskets for our women and children.  What a providential community we live in where there are so many wonderful people who come together to help each other during difficult times.  Because of the generosity of all of you, this will provide much needed items not only to the women in our shelter, but those that we assist through our outreach programs throughout the upcoming holiday season.

Micah's Place gets $20,000

Micah's Place has been chosen to receive a $20,000 grant from The Mary Kay Foundation as part of the organization's annual $3 million national domestic violence grant program.

Micah's Place is one of 150 domestic violence organizations participating in the program. The grant will be used for the operating budget of the shelter.

"This grant is such a blessing to Micah's Place in a variety of ways," said Shandra Riffey, executive director. "Not only does it make up for a deficit in funding this year, but it gives us hope and strength to continue what we do. Domestic violence is not going away and deserves very serious attention. Programs to help battered women and their children require a lot of resources. That's why we are so thankful The Mary Kay Foundation is helping us help families in Nassau County."

Micah's Place is a Certified Domestic Violence Center and the only one serving Nassau County. The mission is to provide prevention and intervention services to victims of domestic violence and to provide education within the community to affect change in behavior and attitudes relating to domestic violence.

Micah's Place offers safe, confidential shelter, advocacy, a 24-hour toll-free hotline, counseling, legal advocacy and support groups to victims of domestic violence. All services are free and confidential. For more information, visit
www.micahsplace.org or call 491-6364. For the hotline, call (800) 500-1119.

The Mary Kay Foundation was created in 1996 and its mission is two-fold: to fund research of cancers affecting women and to help prevent domestic violence while raising awareness of the issue. Since the foundation's inception, it has awarded nearly $25 million to shelters and programs addressing domestic violence prevention and more than $14 million to cancer researchers and related causes throughout the United States.
